30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall - then and now

The commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall was replete with a week's worth of festivities – from Berlin-wide exhibitions to art installations and lectures. In the midst of these events was a lunch talk organized by Willkommen in Berlin on 11 November 2019 at the Berlin Wall Memorial - directly along Bernauer Strasse, where the Wall once stood and where today an extensive monument commemorates the division.

The panel consisted of the following: Marianne Birthler, German politician and former Federal Commissioner for the Documentation of the State Security Service of the former GDR, Dr. Jürgen Sudhoff, former State Secretary and Robin Lautenbach, German journalist who was live on location as events were unfolding on the 9 November 1989. The event was moderated by the former inforadio speaker Sabine Porn.

The panelists engaged interested guests from all over the world with their personal memories of a divided Germany and their experiences of that fateful evening in November 1989. They also discussed important social and political developments that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 30-year process of unity with the visitors. It was a special exchange on a special event in German history.
