A look behind the scenes at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport

On March 13th, 2024, the members of "Welcome to Berlin" had the unique opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at BER Airport, generously arranged by the CEO of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER), Aletta von Massenbach. The Managing Director, Mr. Thomas Hoff Andersson, took plenty of time to introduce us to the travel operations and the innovations already introduced and planned for this airport and its future development.

BER wants to use innovative concepts to set itself apart from other airports and provide travelers with a pleasant stay. Examples of this are "RUNWAY", the option of reserving a time slot at the security checkpoint so that you can go straight through security without having to wait, and the "Sunflower" lanyard for people with hidden disabilities, which they can pick up and put on at the information desk and then be treated with special care by staff. In addition, further security wristbands equipped with the latest technology will soon be installed to make preparation for departure quicker, easier and less stressful, as it will no longer be necessary to remove liquids from hand luggage, for example. Outside on the apron at the parking positions, state-of-the-art AI is being used to make the aircraft handling process smoother.

With a bus provided especially for us, we took a tour of the airport grounds and a detour to the visitor terrace with an impressive panoramic view, excellently guided by the airport company's press officer, Mr. Jan-Peter Haack. As a grand finale, we were invited to the "Zeitgeist" lounge, where exclusivity, service and enjoyment are offered at the highest level. Over snacks and delicious drinks, we were able to chat about our impressions and explore the various rooms that serve as retreats for VIPs, including a cigar lounge, a dining area, a relaxation room, showers and a separate check-in and security area. For even more discretion, it is possible to book your own suite with private bathroom. Limousines are waiting outside for a personal drive to the plane.

This exclusive experience not only gave us a fascinating insight into the workings of an airport, but also provided us with a level of comfort and hospitality that we will not soon forget.
