Country trip in the footsteps of King Charles III.
On May 15th, 2024, WiB's most recent excursion took 34 participants by train to Chorin. A short, picturesque walk through the forest along the lake of the same name took us to the ruins of the medieval Cistercian monastery of Chorin, an important example of Nordic brick Gothic architecture. After a small breakfast in the courtyard café, we explored the historic old walls and the small cemetery under the expert guidance of Dr. Thielen.
Afterwards, Ludolf von Maltzan, the owner of the Brodowin organic farm, which was also visited last year by King Charles III. at his own request, picked up the group in a covered wagon. Everyone enjoyed the ride through the very special forest with its unique constellation of trees to the organically dynamic Brodowin farm. Here we were warmly welcomed by Ludolf and Katja von Maltzan and got introduced to the farm and its special features.
Cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce are grown and milk is processed into dairy products, butter and cheese. If you live in Berlin, you can order these products together with fruit and vegetables as a vegetable box and receive weekly deliveries. After a delicious lunch in the Brodowin farm store, the afternoon was dedicated to the topic of biodynamic agriculture (Demeter) and its anthroposophical principles according to Steiner. This topic aroused great interest among the participants. Our host was able to answer the many questions in an interesting and competent manner.
The proverbial highlight of the day was the visit to the 'little Rummelsberg', which is a nature reserve. At 81 meters high, it is the most important vantage point in the region and offers a unique view over Lake Wesensee to Brodowin and across the glacial landscape as far as Poland. It was a picturesque trip to the Uckermark. The sunny, warm spring weather also contributed to the success of the excursion.
