Fireside-chat with Ronen Steinke
For February Jour Fixe, WIB hosted a fireside-chat with Lawyer and Political Editor Ronen Steinke at the Blue-White Tennis Club on 5 February 2018. He read from his latest book "The Muslim and the Jew” and invited the club members for animated discussions. The journalist of the Süddeutsche Zeitung is known for his work on the biography of Fritz Bauer who was the investigator and German prosecutor in the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials. His latest release tells the compelling story of Egyptian physician Mohammed Helmy who saved his young Jewish patient Anna Boros from deportation.
In this regard, Steinke also referred to the Jewish-Muslim coexistence in the metropolitan Berlin in the 1920’s which was abruptly ended when the National Socialists rose to power. Helmy was honored with a medal awarded by Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center as one of the “Righteous Among the Nations”, the title granted to non-Jewish people who rescued the Jews during the Nazi era.
