The historic Schloss-Saal of the Hotel Bristol Berlin was brimming with excitement as members of Willkommen in Berlin, along with Ambassadors and guests from the business, political and diplomatic sectors gathered together on the 27 January 2020 to celebrate the new year.
State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office Antje Leendertse, who is also the patron of WiB, welcomed members and guests with her opening remarks. Armed with the Club’s achievements in the previous year, she expressed confidence that Willkommen in Berlin will continue its great work of making foreign diplomats feel at home in Berlin through its multitude of activities - from unique opportunities to explore the German capital and other German cities to special events and gatherings. She also acknowledged the voluntary work of the active members and the executive board, whose efforts and dedication are the driving force of the organization.
The President of WiB, Alix von Studnitz Nell, also delivered her welcoming remarks, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to upholding tolerance, international understanding and friendship among all nations. She also thanked the Federal Foreign Office, who through the patronage of State Secretary Leendertse and the support of the chief of Protocol, Mr. Konrad Arz von Straussenburg, contribute to the club’s continuous success.
The celebration was filled with optimism and also good luck - as a “chimney sweeper (a symbol of good fortune in Germany)” greeted guests throughout the evening, inspiring hope for a prosperous 2020.
