WiB’s trip to Sri Lanka – an island of amazing diversity (23 October - 1 November 2025)
Our journey began in Colombo, at the futuristic “City of Dreams“ that rises in striking contrast to traditional heritage buildings. The trip was professionally organized by a local travel agency, and we had the distinct honour of being accompanied by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Germany and our WiB member, H.E. Varuni Muthukumarana.
From the capital, the program led us north to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its remarkably preserved rock paintings and Buddha statues dating back to the 1st century. We explored the country’s rich history by cycling through the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa, visiting Kandy’s Temple with Buddha’s Tooth and walking through the Galle Dutch Fort. We climbed Sigiriya, the 5th-century rock fortress rising above the plains like a monumental sculpture, and rode the iconic mountain train through Ceylon tea plantations. Watching wild elephants up close in Minneriya National Park and spotting monitor lizards weaving through cinnamon trees along the Maadu River will remain unforgettable adventures.
At Kandalama Hotel, Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural masterpiece, the infinity pool blended seamlessly into the surrounding jungle. Birds and monkeys created a natural soundtrack, providing a wonderful experience. Equally impressive was the Sri Lankan’s warm hospitality and the delicious cuisine, not only at the elegant Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, but throughout the country. A gracious reception at the German Ambassador’s residence concluded the journey.
Everyone departed with every intention of returning to this beautiful island, where rainforests fade into arid plains, mist-covered highlands descend toward beaches, and the sea feels pleasantly warm.
