Visit to the Archivio Conz: Typewriters as Art and Icons of the Avant-Garde

As part of a club event, the WiB members had the opportunity to visit the Archivio Conz on 3 December 2025 and explore its latest exhibition, “Typewriters – let the dragon fly,” which showcases the typewriter both as a tool and as an icon of avant-garde creativity.

The Archivio Conz, founded in 2016, is a Berlin-based research institution dedicated to studying, preserving and presenting the legacy of Fluxus, concrete poetry and lettrism. It houses one of the world’s largest collections of Fluxus art, assembled over five decades by visionary collector, publisher, and photographer Francesco Conz (1935–2010). The collection includes more than 4,000 works by over 300 international artists, along with more than 500 artist editions personally commissioned by Conz.

The Director of the Archivio Conz, Professor Hubertus von Amelunxen, warmly welcomed the WiB members and led us on a fascinating tour of the exhibition and the collection upstairs. It was an absolute treat to explore the incredible variety of objects Francesco Conz had gathered over the years — from vibrant paintings and striking sculptures to quirky everyday items like suitcases, refrigerators, and bottles, each one uniquely signed by his fellow artists. Afterwards, we gathered for a cosy buffet where we had the pleasure of chatting with Professor von Amelunxen about the collection and Francesco Conz’s distinctive approach to art. It was a delightful discussion that gave us a deeper appreciation of his innovative legacy.
