Radio and TV up close - visit to Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg

How is a TV news program created? Where does the music on the radio come from? These and many more questions were answered during an interesting 90-minute tour of the historic Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcasting (Rundfunk Berlin Brandburg or rbb) on 10 May 2023. The WiB members were excited to learn what went on behind the scenes in this modern national broadcaster. After a multimedia introduction to the world of rbb, the group visited the large multifunctional “studio A” with creative lighting design equipped with 170 spotlights. Up to two productions can be made simultaneously in this impressive studio. The TV programs such as television magazine “Kotraste” and rbb Praxis are broadcast from here. Studio technology from blue boxes to teleprompters was explained in detail.

Designed by Hans Poelzig, rbb on Masurenallee has been known for its unique architecture since its first inauguration in 1931. The imposing facade is offset with dark clinker bricks and reddish-brown ceramic tiles. The unusual triangular floor plan ensures optimal sound insulation. Our friendly tour guides also talked about the history of the building over the past 90 years. In the 1930s, the first television broadcast began in rbb. The large broadcasting studio that preserves its post-war look, can accommodate one thousand visitors and has an excellent acoustics that endures over time. Concerts are also held here. RBB uses the studio for its radio programs and various musical productions.

At the end of the tour, we had a quick look inside a modern radio studio where talk shows are conducted. Afterwards our tour guides demonstrated a couple of methods of creating sounds inside the soundproof room. It was an amazing experience for our auditory perception. The  final program was the visit to Studio 14, the rbb rooftop lounge, which also functions as the broadcast studio in addition to bar and restaurant. The WiB group enjoyed the magnificent view of Berlin and the chilled atmosphere while having a drink.
