Highlights of Potsdam
Despite the Deutsche Bahn strike, eighteen ladies met in beautiful Potsdam on May 8th, 2015, to visit two locations. The first being St. Nikolai Church designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Pastor Mieke gave an interesting tour of the church and elaborated on its history and relevance today. Then, we climbed the spire to enjoy the spectacular view of Potsdam. Fortunately, two members of our group were professional tour guides. They provided us with additional information during our tour of Potsdam.
Secondly, Mr. Erbe, representing Protocol of the State of Brandenburg, welcomed our group with a glass of champagne and guided us through the recently completed Palace building. The façade of the building is reminiscent of the Winter Palace of the Prussian King Frederic the Great. The façade displays a Rene Magritte quote (Ceci n'est pas une pipe) stating “Ceci n'est pas un chateau”. Inside the palace, visitors are surprised to see a building that combines function and architecture in a fascinating way.
