Day Trip to Hamburg - Hamburg, the Hanseatic League and the modern city
In relation to the lecture on “the Hanseatic League (Hanse)” last April, the group leaders of History and Politics group took the members on a day trip to Hamburg on 27 June 2019. Martin Schmidt of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg welcomed the group at the town hall and gave an in-depth lecture on the trading platform of Hamburg then and nowadays. The members listened to the information with full interest and learnt from the interesting details about the history of the beautiful Hanseatic city and its politics at present.
The next program was a fantastic harbor tour by boat through Hamburg container port and Speicherstadt, the warehouse district that was awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage since 2015. Then the members paid a short visit to the Info Center for Hamburg’s HafenCity. Standing before an impressive wooden model of HafenCity, the town planner, Mr. Thorsten Gödtel of the HafenCity GmbH, gave a thorough explanation on the commencement of the city project 15 years ago, the planning and the ongoing developments. The social, cultural and architectural concepts behind the city planning is absolutely amazing! The visit ended with a walking tour through the new part of the city and a quick tour around the top balcony of Elbphilharmonie where the members enjoyed the beautiful view over the city, the harbor and Hamburg’s new landmarks.
The group highly appreciated the day trip and extends hearty thanks to the Senate of Hamburg for his hospitality.
