In Seven Novels Around the World: Nigeria

Literature in English group had the first meeting of the club year on 23 October 2018. The group leaders greeted their members who have been with the group for years and welcome the new members from Egypt, the United Kingdom, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. They gave information about the program for the new club year and explained the concept of the group activity Around the World' in 7 novels  (book discussions each by a British, an Irish, an African, an Indian, an Australian, an American and a Canadian authors).

Afterwards the group talked about a novel by Teju Cole, “Every Day is for the Thief”. In his book, the author describes the impressions of his main character during the return visit to Lagos, Nigeria. Many of us had had similar experiences and launched various questions such as: “Is education the solution?”, “Should western countries return the museum artifacts that were stolen during colonial time to their country of origin?”, “Can this supposedly non-fictional be regarded as literature?”. These questions led to a lively discussion.
