Japanese Ink Painting - Sumi-e - Club Year 2024/25
Class Overview:
The Sumi-e ink painting group ran from October 2024 to June 2025, with a total of nine sessions. Each session fell into one of two formats: Regular Classes, focused on core technique training, and Special Programs, themed around seasonal topics or specific creative formats. The class welcomed both beginners and intermediate-level learners. With content deeply connected to nature and traditional aesthetics, the program combined structured teaching with creative expression.
The class objectives were to:
- Establish and strengthen foundational skills in traditional ink painting.
- Explore a variety of themes including plants, animals, and landscapes.
- Deepen appreciation for the seasonal beauty of nature and develop artistic sensitivity.
- Broaden creative possibilities through the use of diverse materials.
Class highlights:
October: in our Regular Class, we delved into the art of painting bamboo, a classic symbol of strength and elegance. We practiced basic brush techniques and refine our ink control skills.
November: in our Special Program, participants embarked on creative journey, crafting holiday-themed WASHI greeting cards featuring autumn motifs such as maple leaves and ginkgo.
December: participants traveled to tranquil autumn landscapes with vibrant maple leaves, distant mountains, and pagodas , which were painted on Shikishi paper, focusing on composition and atmosphere.
January: we depicted plum blossoms and cuckoos, emphasizing the contrasts and the dynamic movement.
February: elegant orchid bookmarks were crafted, highlighting flowing lines and subtle colors.
March: spring tulips were painted from life, exploring observation and blending traditional and modern styles.
April: wisteria blossoms in shades of lavender and blue were created on Shikishi, emphasizing layering and color blending.
May: lotus flowers on fan-shaped paper symbolized purity, with attention to water ink harmony and graceful structure.
June: hydrangeas during the rainy season were painted on fan paper, capturing misty atmospheres and soft colors
Summary:
This year’s Sumi-e ink painting group provided a meaningful journey into traditional art, blending cultural depth with technical training. Through the exploration of seasonal subjects, the use of varied materials, and thoughtful instruction, not only we improved our painting skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for nature and the aesthetics of Eastern art.
Looking ahead, we hope to further deepen the creative experience, expand our thematic diversity, and nurtur a broader appreciation for the timeless beauty of ink painting.
