German Impressionists

As a prelude to a planned series of interesting visits in the coming club year, the art lovers explored the permanent collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie on Museum Island on September 26th, 2024.

The two-hour tour began with an explanation of the history of the Alte Nationalgalerie's collection. The focus of the visit was on the German Impressionists and the French Impressionists.

Using paintings by Manet, Renoir and Degas, the development of French Impressionism was presented and contrasted with the works of German artists such as Max Liebermann and Fritz von Uhde. The historical context of the pictorial content and various sources of artistic inspiration in both countries, which led to different interpretations of “Impressionism”, were described in detail.

This gave the group of visitors the opportunity to experience the fascinating perspectives of this important art movement.
