Fasanenstraße: A Walk Full of Surprises
The theme of our architecture walk on 1st of June 2026 was the architectural evolution of one single street: Fasanenstraße in Charlottenburg. The pheasant farm established by Frederick the Great in the 18th century gave the street its name. Today, Fasanenstraße reflects the diversity of Berlin’s architectural history.
Our starting point was the Volkswagen Library at the Technical University of Berlin. From there, we passed the Efficiency House Plus, which demonstrates modern and sustainable approaches to building design. Next, we came to the Ludwig Erhard House with its futuristic design. Because of its curved steel arches, Berliners nicknamed it “the Armadillo.” The magnificent façade of the Theater des Westens, with its medieval-style half-timbering, elaborate ornaments and towers, reminded us of the great era of Berlin’s theatre culture. To conclude the tour, we visited the Gottfried Böhm House. Its distinctive design, featuring domed bay windows supported by concrete columns, bears the signature of the renowned Pritzker Prize laureate.
