Kreuzberg - the alternative district

Our latest walk on 19 November 2025 led us to Kreuzberg, Berlin’s most bohemian district. We began at the Lokdepot, an old locomotive shed still connected by rail to the Museum of Technology. Here, we marveled at an award-winning housing project. Eleven interconnected residential buildings, glowing in vibrant red, now stand on former railway land, featuring staggered balconies.

Next, we explored Möckernkiez, a car-free residential quarter where community gardens evoke memories of Bullerbü and demonstrate how sustainable, communal living can thrive today. We then continued to Riehmers Hofgarten, a true gem from the Gründerzeit era with splendid façades and tranquil inner courtyards.

At Chamissoplatz and along Bergmannstraße, we immersed ourselves in typical Kreuzberg vibe: old buildings, cafés, small shops, and the bustling street life. We paused at the Marheinekeplatz Market Hall to shake off the chill. Kreuzberg is a vibrant blend of history, creativity, and a whole lot of Berlin spirit!
