WiB at the Berlin House of Representatives

The 16 Federal States group, in cooperation with the History and Politics group, organised a visit to the Berlin House of Representatives on 15 October 2025. We were warmly welcomed by the President, Ms Cornelia Seibeld, who provided an insightful overview of the structure and functioning of the Berlin State Parliament. She is the second woman in the history of the House of Representatives to serve as its President, after Dr Hanna-Renate Laurien (1991–1995). The discussion also addressed key issues currently facing the House of Representatives, such as the shortage of affordable housing, the integration of refugees, challenges in the education sector, urban development, population growth and transport infrastructure.

During the subsequent tour of the historic and imposing building, we learned about its rich and eventful history, from its inauguration in 1899 through periods of both democracy and dictatorship. Highlights of the tour included the spacious plenary hall, where members of parliament gather and prepare for their legislative sessions, and the bright, light-filled lobby.

All participants, especially the representatives of foreign embassies based in Berlin, came away with a strong appreciation of the Berlin House of Representatives as the vibrant heart of democracy in the city.
