A Summer Walk Across Tempelhofer Feld

On 30 May 2026, the Giking Group swapped pedals for walking shoes and enjoyed a delightful walk around and across Tempelhofer Feld under pleasantly varied summer skies. Covering three square kilometres, Tempelhofer Feld is the world’s largest inner-city open space. Today, it serves as a vibrant hub for art, culture, nature, sports, and recreation right in the heart of Berlin.

During our walk, we learned about the site’s fascinating and eventful history—from the arrival of the Knights Templar in the 13th century and its role as a Prussian military ground, through the dawn of aviation, the Berlin Airlift, and the impressive architecture of the iconic airport building. We also reflected on the site's darker chapters, including its use as a forced labour camp and the location of Berlin’s only concentration camp.

Along the way, we passed the beautiful Şehitlik Mosque and Germany’s oldest Islamic cemetery, while enjoying the rich and varied natural surroundings of the park. To round off the afternoon walking, we gathered for refreshments at the beach-style café of Luftschloss, a project of Berlin’s independent theatre community.
