Contemporary architecture in Zehlendorf

Our architecture walk on 18 April 2023 covered the architectural interests along Clayallee in Berlin-Zehlendorf. The Lucius Clay street in the former American sector of Berlin, is named after the military governor at that time who is also “the father" of the Berlin Airlift in 1948/49. The former American casino is now home to the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB). Thanks to his profound knowledge of Japan, Ulf Meyer gave a detailed description of the culture, architecture and history.

After crossing the grounds of Truman Plaza which is the former shopping center for American soldiers' families and now a modern residential district with various town houses, we reached the exhibition pavilion of the Bastian Gallery. The impressive, minimalist design of British architect John Pawson continues to be present in the interior of the gallery, where Director Aeneas Bastian, described the concept of this new art venue. The Allied Museum in the so-called "outpost”, a former movie theater and cultural venue for the American community until 1994, was the last stop of our tour.

We look forward to the next program of “Architecture to go" in the new club year. Have a sunny spring and a relaxing summer!
